How to Make the Best of a Worst-Case Scenario
In Los Angeles alone, there are approximately 50,000 car crashes every year. While no one plans on getting into an accident, it is inevitable that either you or someone you know will be involved in one at some point. Here are eight simple steps to follow in case it happens.
1) Stop your car. Don't leave the scene, even if it wasn't your fault.
2) Check for injuries. California law requires you provide "reasonable" assistance to an injured party. Call an ambulance if necessary.
3) Notify the police. If there are injuries, you are required to call the police. Additionally, an official police report is invaluable when it comes time to negotiate with insurance companies.
4) Exchange phone numbers, driver's license information, vehicle registration and insurance information with all parties.
5) Don't claim responsibility for the accident, even if you think it was your fault. There may be other facts you are not aware of.
6) If the damage is more than $750, report the accident to the DMV.
7) Contact your insurance company to report the claim. But, do not give a statement until you have consulted with an attorney.
8) Be patient. An accident happens in mere seconds. Sorting out liability, getting your car repaired and settling with the insurance company can take a lot longer.
When dealing with personal injury matters, especially one where the damages are significant, it is imperative to seek immediate legal representation. Contact Marvin Lanter for more information.
